Training: A Pillar for IRS

The PMI AIRS Project Ramps Up Training for IRS Managers to Improve Spray Quality

High quality indoor residual spraying (IRS) requires spray techniques and skills mastered by IRS trainers and spray operators. In 2016, the U.S. President’s Malaria Initiative (PMI) Africa Indoor Residual Spraying (AIRS) Project in Ethiopia conducted a series of trainings for malaria control managers and trainers to improve Ministry of Health (MoH) staff’s capacity in IRS management, facilitation skills and spray techniques.

More than 300 MoH IRS managers and supervisors were trained. The trainings included a capacity building workshop for IRS leaders at all levels of planning and implementation as well as training of master trainers with adult learning techniques and training for trainers with a specific focus on spray techniques and supervision.

Mr. Mohammed Abdisa, Malaria Focal Person from Diga District, East Wollega Zone in the Oromia Region, recognized the importance of capacity building for IRS managers as a critical step towards improving IRS operations. He noted that despite serving as a malaria control manager for more than 20 years, the trainings conducted this year were special as they addressed areas such as spray techniques and facilitation skills, which are usually taken for granted.

“I am confident that this will go a long way in improving the quality of spray operator training and subsequent improvement of spray quality in my district,” Mr. Abdisa said.

Mr. Abose Wakwaya, Zonal Malaria Focal Person, West Wollega Zone, said, “The training has helped me and the rest of the participants in better understanding IRS and practicing spray techniques, something I have always assumed to have mastered.”

Mr. Wakwaya noted that the training equipped him with extra skills to conduct effective supervision and guide district Malaria Focal Persons in his zone. He said he will ensure that district personnel selected to train and supervise IRS in his districts follow the same practical training model in preparing spray operators.
